FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS FOR OPEN-AIR DEPOSITS
For many years, Esseci S.r.l. has been designing and developing integrated detection, video-monitoring and fire-suppression systems for open-air storage areas containing flammable materials of various kinds, such as unsorted waste, wood, wood chips, plastic material deposits and petroleum derivatives.
This category includes paper and similar deposits (Activity 34), wood deposits and similar products (Activity 36), deposits of rubber products, tyres and the like (Activity 43), plastics deposits (Activity 44), as well as factories and plants that store combustible, flammable or explosive waste.
CASE EXAMPLES
In recent times, this type of protection has become a topical issue, thanks to several fires (arson and non) that have made headlines, including those of Novate Milanese, Calcinate in the province of Bergamo and others. The media has reported a total of 250 landfill fires to have broken out in the last three years, of which 110 were in 2017 alone. Data in hand shows that in 2015 and 2016, there were a total of 140 fires, with an annual average of 5.84 fires per month – an average that rose to 9.17 in 2017.
RISK ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT
Given the nature of the location in which breakout occurs, this type of fire is highly polluting for the air that is then breathed in the vicinity of the fire, thus becoming critical in terms of environmental and safety.
The system is suitably studied, designed and built according to the area, the specific critical factors of the site and the materials stored, “customising” the systems for open-air storage that our company offers on a case-by-case basis. A careful assessment of the Fire Risk (R) is performed, identifying the critical scenarios and resulting in the Probability (P) of occurrence and relative Damage (D) caused. Then, the risk is mitigated with preventive and protective measures.
HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES
Amongst the top effective preventive measures are the maintenance of safety distances between the various heaps of waste or the compartmentalisation of the same in special bays separated by incombustible walls, in line with the quantity of material and the height of storage.
This includes an adequate fire safety management system, for example, by limiting the material that can be stored in certain areas, maintaining the systems, devices and equipment in a state of efficiency, by training and informing personnel, as well as planning for emergency management.
The protective measures include fire control systems through a network of outdoor hydrants suitable for the type of fire to be controlled, through water monitors or even foam to allow the jet to be directed exactly towards the storage area to have caught fire.
For the immediate identification of a fire principle, our company offers a specific temperature detection system with the aid of thermal imaging cameras and automatic recognition algorithms. Furthermore, to prevent ill-intentioned people from accessing the area and committing arson, the installation of security systems such as video surveillance and access control is best.
All of the cited plants and systems form part of the Global Service package that Esseci is able to provide, to deliver a turnkey solution to the customer.
Types of fire-fighting systems
Extinguishing systems designed for the protection of large industrial and civil areas.
Our Aerosol extinguishing systems are efficient, free from environmental impact and competitive on the market due to their swift design, installation and maintenance.
Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) systems are simple, reliable and effective. Being easy to manage and maintain, they offer total safety even in large industrial production spaces.
Our inert gas systems use Argon and Nitrogen which, due to their nature, offer complete safety even on particularly delicate and precious materials.
Dry powder extinguishing systems, in particular with Sodium Bicarbonate, are ideal for extensive sites in the petrochemical industry.
Water Mist extinguishing systems are efficient, having no environmental impact and being non-toxic, offering a high extinguishing power thanks to the elevated pressurisation of the water that is not released as a “deluge” but is sprayed.
In the event of fire, these active safety systems guarantee the escape of any smoke from the safeguarded rooms, produced by the combustion in the areas at risk. With this mode, the SistemOpen90°™ ensures the areas are safe and smoke-free, guaranteeing the area leading to the escape routes is protected.
Designed to suppress and extinguish fires of solid materials, flammable liquid fuels and electrical equipment.
Particularly suited to areas in which extinction with water is not possible.
Foam Systems avail of a mixture of water and foam to extinguish fires and are particularly appropriate in the presence of flammable liquids.
For all systems using water as an extinguishing agent, these guarantee that the flow rate is exact so as to ensure perfect efficiency and reliability.
ESSECI S.r.l. offers an instrumentation rental service and performs tests directly with its own qualified technicians. On request, a Test Report signed by a Fire Prevention Expert can also be issued.
In the event of a fire, active safety systems guarantee a higher pressure in the safeguarded premises than in the other environments. In this way, they keep the safeguarded areas constantly free from smoke, creating a protected area leading towards the escape routes.
Our smoke and gas detection systems, with the relative alarm signalling systems and any extinguishing units, guarantee full protection against the risk of fire.
Integrated detection, video monitoring and extinguishing systems with remote control for the open-air storage of various kinds of flammable materials.
